Subaru of New Zealand is celebrating 25 years of the WRX in 2017 and wants to find the best WRXs in the country to celebrate this iconic performance model.
WRX owners are as proud as punch where their cars are concerned (and rightly so) and now they have the opportunity to display their WRX at one of New Zealand’s premium motorsport events. Subaru is running a competition that will see New Zealand’s 25 most stunning WRXs win a Subaru Leadfoot Festival experience and asks entrants to simply upload a photo of their WRX to www.subaru.co.nz/wrx25 with some information about what makes their pride and joy so special. Share the entry on social media with the hashtag #wrx25nz and get friends and family to vote. The public vote accounts for 50% with a panel of three Subaru-appointed judges rounding out the remaining 50% of the vote.
The judges are Ben Hunt, the 2015 NZ National Rally Champion and Subaru of New Zealand Brand Ambassador; Rod Millen, Leadfoot Ranch owner, Leadfoot Festival founder, and motorsport legend; and Subaru of New Zealand Managing Director Wallis Dumper.
The 25 chosen winners will attend the Leadfoot Festival held over Waitangi Weekend, February 4 and 5, 2017, and enjoy Subaru hospitality at the Coromandel event, as well as having their WRX on display in a Subaru WRX tent in prime position at the festival.
Five lucky owners will also be chosen on the day to drive their WRX up the incredible 1.6km driveway, owned and built by Mr Millen, on his oceanfront ranch in Hahei.
The Leadfoot Festival is a unique motorsport event held annually, where Mr Millen and his wife Shelly bring together an exciting mix of classic and performance cars, vintage motorcycles and motorsport identities. It features a long, perfectly-sealed driveway - designed to be the perfect hill climb - that winds through the property. Subaru of New Zealand provides the official pace cars on event, to keep the 100-plus competitors in check.
Mr Millen is looking forward to seeing the Subaru WRX competition come to fruition.
"I am really excited that Subaru has chosen the Leadfoot Festival to celebrate 25 years of the WRX. During my career I competed against many famous WRX drivers like Possum Bourne, Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Markku Alen to name a few. The WRX always proved to be a tough competitor. I am honoured to share this celebration with Subaru,” he says.
Subaru of New Zealand Managing Director Wallis Dumper is excited about seeing the variety of different WRXs that will be uncovered in the competition.
“Obviously the partnership we have formed with Leadfoot will attract a strong interest from those ‘Subaru-ists’ who enjoy a bit of high octane. But we are also looking for owners of WRX models that may not be a ‘petrol-head’ but have a truly original car at home. There have been literally thousands of WRX models sold to Kiwis who love to drive. This 25-year celebration should also help uncover some of those ‘gems’ in garages that are pristine and are enjoyed as completely original examples,” he says.
