Subaru announces the new all-electric SUV SOLTERRA for international markets

SOLTERRA is Subaru’s all-electric SUV, and it will be the first Subaru vehicle to be built on the battery electric vehicle (BEV) dedicated e-Subaru Global Platform.

Subaru Corporation has announced today that Subaru's all-new, electric SUV the SOLTERRA will go on sale mid-2022 in the United States, Canada, Europe, China and Japan.

SOLTERRA is Subaru’s all-electric SUV, and it will be the first Subaru vehicle to be built on the battery electric vehicle (BEV) dedicated e-Subaru Global Platform, which has been jointly developed by Subaru and Toyota Motor Corporation. The collaboration between the two companies will enable the roll out of various EV models efficiently by combining multiple modules and components, such as the front, centre and rear of the variants.

Introducing Subaru’s All-New Electric Vehicle - the SOLTERRA SUV

While Toyota and Subaru have combined their knowledge to create a completely new platform, Subaru has retained the superior passive safety and vehicle stability, which has always been essential to the brand and will continue to be crucial to the BEV dedicated platform.

Not only the Subaru SOLTERRA’s platform has been jointly developed by Subaru and Toyota, as the wide-ranging collaboration includes product planning, design and performance evaluation. The two companies have combined their respective strengths - Subaru’s long-accumulated All-Wheel Drive technology and Toyota’s outstanding vehicle electrification technology - to create a new SUV with the attributes that only an all-electric vehicle can offer.

When Will We See the SOLTERRA in the NZ Electric Vehicle Market?

Subaru of New Zealand’s Managing Director Wallis Dumper is excited to see Subaru continuing to progress towards a more sustainable future, following the launch of the Kiwi adventure brand’s e-Boxer Hybrids last year.

“We are thrilled that Subaru has announced its first electric vehicle, however we are still in discussions with Subaru Corporation about availabilty for the New Zealand market.  Future electric vehicle projects form part of ongoing dialogue between Subaru of New Zealand and the factory,” he says.

“The SOLTERRA news will no doubt excite many of our customers who are looking forward to owning a Subaru electric vehicle, however currently there is no timeline to share.”

The name SOLTERRA was created by joining the Latin words ‘SOL’ and ‘TERRA’ – which translate as ‘sun’ and ‘earth’ respectively. Subaru Corporation gave the EV this name in appreciation of mother nature and to reinforce its intention to further advance coexistence with it, alongside its customers.

It also represents Subaru’s commitment to delivering the traditional Subaru SUV’s go-anywhere capabilities in an all-electric vehicle.
