The Legacy couples pure power with pure precision to deliver cutting edge performance, drivability and superior control from the ground up. And at the heart and soul of it is an intoxicating formula - Subaru’s unsurpassed horizontally-opposed Boxer engine combined with its iconic Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Explore the reasons as to why Legacy has earned a reputation as a great driver’s car.
Symmetrical All- Wheel Drive
The sign of a true performer, is good balance. And when it comes to driving a Subaru, superior balance equals superior vehicle control. That’s why Subaru has built its reputation on its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (SAWD) system and a symmetrical drivetrain that delivers an innate sense of balance from the ground up.
SAWD delivers engine power to all four wheels simultaneously. Having power distributed across all four wheels, rather than two on conventional vehicles, gives you twice the grip capacity. So under acceleration there’s more grip for cornering and more capacity to keep on track through the corners. Ultimately, having the driving force spread across all four wheels means greater control and confidence.
The Boxer engine is designed to sit lower and flatter in the engine bay, than traditional engines. Due to this unique horizontally-opposed configuration the engine delivers less noise and vibration to the cabin, while the lowered centre of gravity improves stability, cornering and traction with the road.
Due to this unique horizontally-opposed configuration, the engine delivers less noise and vibration to the cabin, while the lowered centre of gravity improves stability, cornering and traction with the road.
Also due to its low height, the engine is driven downwards and under the floor of the cabin in the event of a severe frontal collision to reduce the risk of injury to occupants.
Legacy also offers a choice of lively and responsive petrol engines, the 2.5-litre and 3.6-litre:
Legacy's 2.5-litre four cylinder, horizontally-opposed naturally aspirated Boxer engine which has been calibrated to deliver 129kW at 5800rpm and increased mid to low range torque of 235Nm at 4000rpm.
The 3.6-litre six cylinder engine has been mated to Subaru’s Lineartronic™ Transmission (SLT) for the first time, with an impressive 191kW at 6000rpm and 350 Nm torque at 4400rpm. The SLT has been optimised to couple seamlessly with the 3.6-litre engine for responsive acceleration and improved drivability.
Subaru LineartronicTM Transmission (SLT)
Subaru LineartronicTM Transmission (SLT) delivers smooth, seamless or exhilarating, stepped gear changes depending on your driving style and throttle input. LineartronicTM SLT optimises the gear ratios to the driving conditions - making for the best possible driving experience. LineartronicTM SLT is extremely responsive whilst traversing winding roads and hills, with strong pulling power while also providing incredibly smooth driving in urban and highway conditions.
With a range of clever new technologies and design changes the Legacy boasts impressive environmental credentials. Improved aerodynamics, lighter componentry and engine optimisation contribute to a reduction in both fuel consumption as well as emissions:
The 2.5-litre engine paired with LineartronicTM SLT and Auto Stop Start returns an impressive fuel consumption figure of 7.3l/100km1 while meeting strict EURO6b emission standards.
The 3.6-litre engine paired for the first time with LineartronicTM SLT also returns an improved fuel consumption figure of 9.9l/100km1 while meeting strict EURO6b emission standards despite its 191kW of power.
Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE)
Legacy's nimble performance is further enhanced by Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) on all model variants, which offers a selection of driving modes. Choose from Intelligent (I) mode for everyday driving or Sport (S) mode for enhanced acceleration and all-round sporty performance. The 3.6RS sees the addition of Sport Sharp (S#) mode for a truly thrilling drive.
Handling and Steering
The Legacy offers the driver an incredibly dynamic drive thanks to its perfect mix of technology and design. The flat Boxer engine sits low in the engine bay giving the Legacy an exceptionally low centre of gravity. Additionally, Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive distributes power to all four wheels providing more grip for cornering and acceleration. When these inherent traits are used in conjunction with new technology such as Active Torque Vectoring, which regulates braking and torque to the front wheels to prevent oversteer, the Legacy provides a handling experience that will leave you astounded.
